Task: Purchase an ESD Soldering Mat to Prevent Electrostatic Discharge While Repairing Atari 8-Bit Computer Circuit Boards

Introduction
When I started doing repairs and mods on Atari 8-bit computers I purchased a silicon soldering mat (see first photo below) to protect the surface of my desk and to protect my circuit boards from electrostatic discharge (ESD). I assumed the silicon would not conduct electricity. However, I have always noticed that when removing the silicon mat after use it would build up a lot of static between the bottom of the mat and my desk. I then got concerned after running across this YouTube video from Kerry Wong who actually measured the static coming through the silicon and found that it is a significant problem. This prompted me to purchase a soldering mat that is specifically designed to reduce ESD. I went with a Weller-branded mat (see second photo below). This is the same German company that makes my soldering iron (shown in both photos).


Instructions
Amazon caries several different brands of ESD-rated soldering mats. I went with the grey Weller because I trust the brand and the reviews were very good. There are several things I like about this mat. First, it is much bigger covering 3′ by 2′ of desk. Second, it has place to attach an anti-static wrist strap (see lower right). Finally, it is heat and chemical resistant. I liked it so much I bought a second one.
Comments
The thought of static coming through the silicon mat and zapping one of my circuit boards worried me. Even after hours of use, the Weller mat showed no sign of a static charge buildup between the bottom of the mat and my desk surface. This is in stark contrast to my silicon mat that crackled when I would take it off the surface.
