Purchase an Atarimax SD Multi-Cart for Atari 5200 (10-15 mins)

Task: Purchase an Atarimax SD Multi-Cart for Atari 5200

Needed: Web browser

Time: 10-15 minutes

Introduction

My previous post covers purchasing an Atari 5200 console if you don’t already have one. As with all Ataris, the cartridges can be quite expensive with prices of $20 to $50 each not uncommon. An alternative is to purchase an SD-based cartridge that you can load game binaries on. I have previously posted about SD flash card solutions for the Atari 2600 and 8-bit computers. The good news is that Atarimax makes one for the 5200. I recently purchased on of these and got a chance to try it out. It was super easy to use and reminds me a lot of the Harmony cartridge for the 2600. All you need to do is load the binaries on the card from your PC and then insert it into the SD cartridge. Then you are good to go on the 5200 where you use the joystick to choose the game you want to play by pushing the start button.

Instructions

Navigate to the Atarimax website and purchase the SD Multi-Cart for Atari 5200. These are not cheap and will set you back $129.95 plus $6 for shipping.

Comments

One of the advantages of having an SD card is that a number of Atari 8-bit computer games have been ported to the 5200. You can download these and play them on the 5200 with the SD cartridge.

You can find 5200 ROMs on Atari Age. You can also find them on Atarimania.
