Edit ATR Disk Images (10-15 mins)

Task: Edit ATR Disk Images

Needed: Altirra emulator

Time: 10-15 mins

Introduction

I have previously posted about backing up floppy disks to ATR files on your PC using the Atarimax ProSystem software. This process can also be reversed allowing you to write ATR files from your PC to a floppy disk. This is all relatively straightforward but at some point you will want to edit those ATR images on your PC to add new files. Historically, this has been done with the widely used makeATR software. However, there does not seem to be a 64-bit version of this available. Fortunately, ATR images can be edited in Altirra using the Disk Explorer option.

Instructions

Step 1 Download and install the Altirra emulator. I have a previous post on this.

Step 2 Navigate to the Tools menu and select Disk Explorer. This will bring up a blank window. Click on the dots button under the X that closes the window. This will bring up a file window where you can select the ATR image you want to edit.

Step 3 Right-clicking on a file in the open ATR image will allow you to rename or delete it. You can also drag and drop files in and out. Any changes are automatically saved to the ATR image file on your computer.

Comments

This is a really easy way to edit ATR files and many of us with PCs use Altirra routinely. I confirmed that some BASIC programs that I dropped into the ATR image worked correctly in Altirra when run.

Here is an Atari Age forum thread from 2012 on this topic.
